Celery is a low calorie food and a great nutritious choice as a low calorie snack. However, there is no such thing as a negative calorie food, and stories you read about celery being a negative calorie food that burns off calories is blatantly untrue.

Celery does contain very low calories at roughly 16 calories per 100 grams (1 medium stalk) while being very dense in water and fiber. It’s why it is a chewy, crispy vegetable that you really have to gnaw through. Foods that are dense in water and fiber will keep you feeling full for a longer period of time than other vegetables. All these things add up to that celery will help you lose weight if you eat it over other snacks that are higher calorie that leave you feeling hungry soon after.

Celery has niche nutrients like apiuman and pectin-based polysaccharides that also help stop you from getting stomach ulcers. Those compounds have a positive effect on the lining of your stomach and reduce stomach secretions. Celery also has about 25 different anti-inflammatory compounds that help provide some relief from conditions like osteoporosis and arthritis that are major sources of chronic inflammation.
